Hair fall: when it is normal and when to get it checked

Everyday shedding
Losing some strands while washing or combing is part of the normal hair cycle. Volume that looks and feels the same over months is usually nothing to worry about.
Worth checking
- A widening parting or visibly thinner scalp
- Sudden, heavy shedding after illness, surgery, childbirth or crash dieting
- Patchy loss, itching, flaking or scalp pain
- Hair fall alongside fatigue or other health changes
What an assessment involves
We look at the scalp and hair shafts, discuss your history and, where relevant, suggest blood tests before recommending treatment. Identifying the cause first is what makes treatment work.
